OKR FM CHILDREN & YOUNG PERSONS PRESENTER POLICY
Firstly it needs to be clearly stated that Mitchell Community Radio Inc. has in place an existing Working with Children policy and that anyone who works in the station must have a Current Working with Children’s check from the Department of Justice. This is a requirement not an option.
Secondly no child or young person will be permitted to present a program if there is only one adult in the studio complex.
Prior to Broadcasting the following MUST be complied with:
Junior Presenters (12-18 years)
1. Be able to present on-air programs alone with the consent of the CoM and the parent/guardian.
2. Will be trained by a presenter holding a current Victorian Working With Children card.
3. That the trainer informs the presenter of the responsibilities of being a presenter.
The trainer gives feedback to the programming committee as to whether or not the junior presenter is responsible enough to run a program by themselves
Training
1. Ensure presenters under the age of 18 will only be trained by a person holding a current Victorian Working With Children’s card.
2. Ensure that a presenter is thoroughly trained before being permitted to present a program.
3. Ensure that where possible, training will occur in the trainees preferred timeslot, however this is not always the case and training will made available in a trainers timeslot.
4. Ensure that at the completion of training, every endeavour to find a timeslot suitable to the trainee’s availability, however no guarantees that a particular timeslot will be available.
Broadcasting:
Once a child has been trained and accepted as a presenter:
1. If the child is under 14, a parent or child’s legal guardian must be present whilst the child is broadcasting.
2. Once a child has been trained and accepted as a presenter, a parent, the child’s legal guardian or a family member over the age of 18 must be present whilst the child is broadcasting.
3. A child will not be allocated a program time before 8.00am or after 8pm
4. Guests and visitors under the age of 18, must be accompanied by a parent, the child’s legal guardian or a family member over the age of 18.
5. No friends or associates of the presenter may be in the studios while the presenters are on air.
Further Station Adult Involvement
Following the successful completion of the period of training the following are required to be observed.
1. The Adult Supervisor is there for both to ensure no technical problems arise and to comply with the Station Child Safety Policy.
2. That the role of the Adult Supervisor is just that, to supervise. They are not to intervene with on air comments or content unless specifically requested by the presenter.
3. That the Child/Young Person is responsible for the content of the program.
4. That the MAXIMUM amount of adult supervisor contribution MUST not exceed more than 10% or the program time. For example in a 1 hour program 6 minutes.
Failure will lead to the Adult Supervisor being relieved of their duties as an Adult Supervisor until such time the Committee of Management are sure that they will comply.
